I have been and know others who have been guilty of accumulating things in an attempt to satisfy an inner longing or keep up with society’s standards. The media tells us through different outlets that we need to buy this, have that, or look like them in order to have fulfillment and happiness. This often causes us to over spend and live way beyond our means. Down the road this causes stress, regret, and a financial burden. This is not God’s plan or His best for us. He wants us to live free from everything, even unnecessary debt and financial burdens. This passage below points out exactly how we can get that deep sense of fulfillment. Godliness is simply allowing His character to be seen in and through us. Living this way is the source of the greatest gain in the world because the rewards is a rich, fulfilling life with God and ultimately everlasting life. Not only is godliness the source of great gain, but it needs to be joined with contentment. This is being satisfied with what we have as we confidently trust God, who has more than enough, to provide our needs and wants. True contentment will prevent us from buying things that we do not need that put us more in the red financially. It is a great idea to commit to tithing and giving, creating and living from a budget, and developing a habit of saving. It is also wise to seek out information from trusted sources on practical financial principals and money management. Treating ourselves for the hard work that we do is okay, that is how we keep life balanced. It’s just important to remember to do so without breaking the bank. Ask yourself what steps can you take today to become more financially responsible?
1 Timothy 6:6 (AMP)
But godliness actually is a source of great gain when accompanied by contentment [that contentment which comes from a sense of inner confidence based on the sufficiency of God].
